1.1 Background

English is an official language of many commonwealth countries, and understood and used widely. English used for diplomacy, education, business, economic, political, international trade, and social life. According to Deputy Director of the Language and Culture Exchange (LCE) Medan, John Philip Hutagalung, English in addition to affecting the business also affected the labor market and culture. Since English creates a key factor to compete with workers from another countries (AFP, May 2014).

English for economic is a skill-based course designed specifically for the students of economics who are about to enter English-medium tertiary level studies. It provides carefully graded practice and progressions in the key academic skills that all students need, such as listening to lectures and speaking in seminars. It also equips students with the specialist language they need to participate successfully within an economic department.

AEC or we know as ASEAN Economic Community 2015 is a kind of business corporation among ASEAN countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Philppines.
